Import Box: Charles Mingus LP, Cryptopsy, Portion Control, Arthur Russell and Loads More!

Posted by on

Import Box is landing this Friday!  Here's a run-down on the new arrivals. Out of towners, online store has been updated and new arrivals are viewable on the HOME page and HERE. Sorry it's a bit less detailed than usual, but i've been flying solo majority of the week.

A HANDFUL OF DUST - Topology Of A Phantom     Topology of a Phantom City was a cassette originally released in 1996 on Bruce Russell’s glorious Corpus Hermeticum label, and this reissue captures the spirit of the original version by…well, by also being on cassette. For these recordings, the core members of A Handful of Dust—guitarist Russell (The Dead C) and violinist Alastair Galbraith—are joined by Peter Stapleton (Terminals, Pin Group, Scorched Earth Policy) on percussion and synthesizers. The two sprawling paeans to the glories of improvised invention ride waves of menacing intensity and freeform scrawl.  This reissue is a refreshed opportunity for fans to hear one of the more obscure recordings in A Handful of Dust’s catalog. It also marks the first in a series upcoming cassette releases on Ba Da Bing—leading with their shiniest leg first.

MC ÄSS - Live In New Jersey    The rage of rebellion refried and roaring, ÄSS ("AHH-sss") marries Monoshock, Electric Eels and Red Transistor with Judas Priest and UFO in an unauthorized ceremony still illegal in most states. Made up of the underground scourges Andy Kman (TeePee Records), Brian Turner (WFMU), Andrew Shumway and Chris Larsen (honored former member, since replaced by the Crucifucks drummer), ÄSS tear through a set recorded live in Hoboken where you can feel the scum on the walls and sweat clouds in the air. Rock festers on in the crevices.

LP+CD ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB - Fountain Transmitter   A boggling and super-fun 100+ minutes from Neil Campbell’s Astral Social Club, Fountain Transmitter Medications delivers the head-on collision of classic UK electronic styles, electric grit and the future.

LP AXIS: SOVA Early Surf GOD?    Collaging riffs and inspirations, scraping and scrapping the blown-out waves from his amps to make SONGS. Tweaking the minutia with headphones, AXIS: SOVA fought and fucked the cassette tape limits in order to get a slice of weirdo bedroom vibe-cake, with a mega-bent guitar focus, to make Early Surf.

LP AYE AYE S/t     Terrestrial crunching rock drifting over a great expanse, Aye Aye is limited to 300 copies on vinyl and includes a cdigital download

BK BERMAN, DAVID Portable February    DAVID BERMAN has spent the last two decades in the public eye, stalking out his own territory as the leader of the rock band SILVER JEWS as well as poet and writer of the book Actual Air

LP BIKINI KILL S/t     Killer debut from Kathleen Hannah and the gang.

LP BIRDS OF MAYA Vol. 1     Cosmic guitar psych fuzz classic.

LP BISHOP, SIR RICHARD Tangier Sessions    Armed with a newly purchased antique guitar of unknown origin, SIR RICHARD BISHOP spent a week in Tangier, Morocco wandering the city, drinking strong coffee and improvising on his new instrument. The tone of the guitar and Sir Richard’s gentle, loving touch with it hold forth from the first moment of Tangier Sessions, sitting clear and true in the home-recorded night air above the city.

LP BLAXXX For No Apparent Reason     LAMONT (BIM) THOMAS of OBNOX infamy took a little break from schooling/embarrassing the entire music business during his annual visit to SXSW by visiting the Austin studio of OBN III’s chief ORVILLE NEELEY. With Thomas commandeering the microphone and drums, Neeley taking the bass and co-conspirator TOM TRIPLETT (OBN III’s, THE ENERGY), grabbing the guitar, the newly formed supergroup proceeded to knock out 4 super distorted genre-smashers

LP CIRCLE PIT Bruise Constellation    More Jack Mannix and Angie!

LP COLOURED BALLS Ball Power Reissue    Oz rock classic. Kinda like Hawkwind with a pack of Winnie reds tucked into the sleeve of their bonds t-shirt.

LP CONSUMERS All My Friends Are Dead    Killer lost punk album from Kansas! Drag City re-issued it and we're grateful.

LP CRIME Murder By Guitar    Superior Viaduct release long lost San Francisco proto-punk band. Hot wire My Heart was covered by Sonic Youth on Sister.

LP CRYPTOPSY None So Vile    Classic death / grind metal. Head spinning ferocity. One of the best!

LP DARK MATTER S/t   Stephen Cogle of Vacuum, The Victor Dimisich Band and The Terminals. Gothic psychedelia is equal parts Chills, Television Personalities and Scientists

2XLP DEAD C Harsh 70s Reality    Originally seeing the light of day in April of 1992, Harsh 70s Reality was not just a high water mark for that year, but for the ages. The ultimate post-rock album. To hear it is to understand why one scribe back in the day referred to their sound as “a garbage truck backing over the abyss.”

10" DEADBEATS Complete Dangerhouse

LP DICKS Kill From The Heart    Gay Texan singer takes on this hostile world. Ripper album!

PICLP DILLOWAY, AARON The Beauty Bath   Reissue of limited edition LP (Rockatansky 2013), about half of which is different and reworked material

LP DORONCO GUMO Old Punks    Doronco Gumo is led by Doronco, a bass player most well known for his stints with Les Rallizes Denudes, Suishou no Fune, and Keiji Haino. Translated as "Mud Cloud," the name is actually poetic in a Zen beggar / wandering monk kind of way

LP EASTLINK S/t   One of the best Aussie albums of last year!

MC EYE The Future Will Be    Eye is among the finest of New Zealand’s rich improvisational scene, and The Future Will Be Repeated follows their stunning Winterwork LP of last year. Including Peter Stapleton (The Terminals, The Pin Group, Flies Inside The Sun), Peter Porteous (Empirical), Nathan Thompson (Sandoz Lab Technicians) and Jon Chapman (Double Leopards, Rory Storm and the Invaders), the group incorporates percussion, guitar, piano and electronics into a beautiful melee

MC FAMILY UNDERGROUND No Host. No Guest   Denmark’s greatest drone rock duo unveils an epic record of beauty. Family Underground has released numerous records with Not Not Fun, Into The Lunar Night, Chocolate Monk and Turgid Animal over their ten-plus years of existence. No Host. No Guest. displays the group at their best, delving to ominous lows and intense highs with equal skill and precision.

LP FANG Landshark    The classic 1983 hardcore scuzz rock debut from Berkeley, CA’s Fang, Landshark is a unique mix of erratic thrashers and slow Sabbath-oid noise riff

LP FERRARO, JAMES Clear    Clear and Discovery were originally released as two companion CDRs by James Ferraro (of the whole Skaters / Lamborghini Crystal / 90120 / Splash / Nirvana axis) and comprise the August 1974 (Taj-Mahal Travellers) of his discography. Both albums contain absolutely beautiful whirling hall-of-knives-style synth drone that makes one want to reference Klaus Schulze or Bobby Beausoleil.

LP FERRARO, JAMES Discovery

LP FUZZ S/t ITR 254 LP    Atlast! More copies of this fuzz psych gem from last year.

LP GILBERT, B.C. / G. LEWIS 3r4  In 1980, after three relentlessly creative albums, the members of Wire were at an impasse, unsure of how to push themselves any further as a four-piece rock band. While frontman Colin Newman spent the band’s hiatus mining Wire’s knack for intelligent and contorted pop songs, guitarist Bruce Gilbert and bassist / vocalist Graham Lewis joined forces for a series of experimental projects (Dome, Cupol, etc.) where the primary motivating concept was “studio as instrument.” 3R4, the duo’s only LP under the B.C. Gilbert/G. Lewis moniker and the very second album to be released on 4AD, eschews melody and structure in favor of ambient-noise soundscapes, metallic textures and tense moods.

7" GILBERT, B.C. / G. LEWIS Ends With The Sea   Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis have always juggled darkness and light in their various collaborations (Dome, Cupol, etc.); Gilbert’s pointillist melodicism counterbalanced by Lewis’s menacing bass and sardonic lyrics. While the duo explores cinematic soundscapes on their album 3R4, here they return to more song-based territory with icy vocals, detached guitar lines and even a faint industrial vibe. Ends With the Sea provides a vital glimpse into the creative forces that even a band as daring and inventive as Wire could not contain. This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of SPK, Chris Carter, and Einstürzende Neubauten.

12" GINO & THE GOONS S/t     I want to introduce you to the soundtrack for every late night dance party you have from here on out. GINO & THE GOONS present to you an eight song instruction manual on having a good time. Fist pumping, drink spilling, sing along hits of the budget rock variety. A lost broadcast from the airwaves Radio X! Ass shaking, primitive, and TOTALLY PUNK. Initially pressed in an edition of 300 by the band which quickly sold out, and now repressed in an edition of 200 by Total Punk.

LP GRONG GRONG S/t    Classic Oz swamp dirge from Adelaide. Long forgotten LP put out by Alternative TEntacles!

LP GROUPER Ruins    Re-stocked. Dark, minimal folk.

LP HALL OF FAME S/t    Hall of Fame's third full-length album finds these NYC indoor miners forging even deeper into their secret cave of gems (financed with new picks'n'shovels on the Siltbreeze tab). Like their previous output on the Amish label, this one's a melange of tribal thump, eastern drone, raga concrète and melodious melancholia. Hall of Fame's unique, not easily identifiable sound has been compared to revered oufits such as Flies Inside the Sun and The Shadow Ring, sometimes even in English

2XLP HECKER, TIM Virgins   Virgins was recorded during three periods in 2012, mostly in Reykjavik, Montreal and Seattle, using ensembles in live performance. The sound palette of this work is wider, almost 'percussive' and tighter sounding than previous works

2X7" INFLATABLE BOY CLAMS S/t    San Francisco provocateurs Inflatable Boy Clams recorded one of the greatest all-female art punk records ever made, a wrongfully obscure five-song double 7-inch EP which has garnered a cult following ever since its initial release on Subterranean Records in 1981.

LP INSULTS Insults To Injury    The long lost INSULTS album. Fifteen spastic twitches from 1979 by the prides of Watsonville, California

LP JENNINGS, WAYLON Honky Tonk Heroes    One of the best country albums ever.

LP KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD I’m In Your Mind Fuzz     Re-stocked!

MC KOLOVOS, PETER A Wolf Should Only Be     This cassette captures the best of his live performances during a West Coast Tour during August 2014

LP KURT VILE Constant Hitmaker    Early album re-stocked!

MC LA MORTE YOUNG La Morte Young   With members of Sun Stabbed, Talweg and Nappe, this French group “draw[s] singing feedback from expiring amps and extend[s] moments of tense string-brut into colossal, slow-burning ascensions,” explain our friends at Volcanic Tongue.

LP LEON, CRAIG Nommos    First appearing incongruously on John Fahey’s Takoma label in 1981, Nommos remains enshrouded in impenetrable mystery—from its understated artwork to the rich assemblage of analog synths contained inside. According to Head Heritage, Nommos is the “missing link between the proto-industrial rhythm and drone of Suicide and the whole minimalist drone / static / repetition method of Terry Riley and La Monte Young.”

LP LX SWEAT City Of Sweat   German steamroom wrecking crew LX Sweat returns from a winter of festival dates and self-symbiosis to lay out an impressively realized full-length debut of voidist club fantasia, equal parts Screw bootlegs, slow-jack synth freestyle, and degraded phaser wash.

LP MAX BLOCK, THE Air Ache In The Belly Of     For the majority of newbie Flying Nun collectors, The Max Block’s eponymous (and only) 12-inch release is more myth than fact. Few seemed to have been pressed, and even fewer were available in the brief window of time (mid-’80s) when it was “around.” Unknown until very recently was that a second EP had been recorded and slated for release by Flying Nun but never realized. Air Ache in the Belly of the Leech is a compendium of both, and thus the complete recorded works of The Max Block. You’re welcome.

LP MELCHIOR, DAN Assemblage Blues    This here LP seemingly vibes from such leftfield Blighty heavies as Instant Automatons and L. Voag as well as the dark side of Alex Chilton (think Dusted in Memphis) and the 3:00 A.M. shudder of Prominent Disturbance

LP MELCHIOR, DAN UND DAS Hunger

LP MINGUS, CHARLES The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady   Bassist / composer Charles Mingus is one of the most radical figures in American music. Lester Bangs praises, “the experience of the first few listenings to a record so total, so mind-twisting, that you authentically can say you’ll never be quite the same again. Black Saint and The Sinner Lady did that, and a very few others. They’re events you remember all your life, like your first real orgasm.” This long out-of-print vinyl release has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes.

LP MINOR THREAT Out Of Step   Re-stocked DC Punk classics!

LP MINOR THREAT S/t (first 2 7”s)

LP MORDECAI Neil’s Generator    Neil’s Generator embodies the same kind of loose, ragged glory perpetrated by the Meat Puppets, Rayne, Dead Moon, and the Velvets staring into a cracked and filthy mirror.

LP NOTS We Are Nots    Memphis band follows up their first two singles on Goner Records with their guitar-driven, synth-laden debut LP.  We Are Nots was put to tape over the summer by Doug Easley and arrives just in time to land a spot on your Top Ten of 2014.

LP NUMBER ONES, THE The # 1s   killer power pop from Ireland.

LP OM Conference Of The Birds    Al from Sleep meditates his way through this chanting, droning classic

LP PALACE BROTHERS S/t Aka "Days In The Wake"    Bonnie Prince Billy in previous darker, minimal eerie mode.

LP PINK SECTION S/t      This first-time retrospective LP collects the band’s rare 1979 single, the self-titled EP, unreleased demos and live material. Recommended for fans of Suburban Lawns, Units, and DEVO.

LP PORTION CONTROL I Staggered Mentally     The band classifies their music style as “Hard Rhythmic Electronics” and were a major influence on Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and Depeche Mode.  This album laid the template for the harder edged rhythmic industrial sound of the ‘80s and ‘90s. I Staggered Mentally is as raw as electronic music gets.

LP PROUD, PIP A Bird In The Engine    In the late ’60s, Pip Proud recorded two of the oddest records ever to come out of Australia—Adreneline & Richard and A Bird in the Engine—before vanishing into obscurity for the better part of three decades. Often called the “Australian Syd Barrett,” Proud actually released his second album in 1969, a year prior to The Madcap Laughs, and developed his indigenous psychedelia in virtual isolation.

LP PROUD, PIP Adreneline & Richard

LP REALLY RED Volume 1: Teaching You     Alternative Tentacles is proud to present the first-ever complete, three-volume collection of Texas punk legends Really Red. None of their catalog has been available for years—some not for decades! Really Red was the backbone of Houston’s underground from the early punk era clear through ’80s hardcore. Like The Dicks in Austin, they directly challenged an insanely violent police department at no small risk to their own lives.

2XLP RED AUNTS Come Up For A Closer    The Red Aunts were an all-female punk band that formed in 1991 in Long Beach, California, when Terri Wahl (guitar / vocals) recruited friends Kerry Davis (guitar / vocals), Debi Martini (bass / vocals), and Lesley Ishino (drums). Their brand of unfiltered music is toxic, taking a sharp claw to every riot grrrl cliché it can shred.  After five albums, several years of touring and a huge fanbase, they called it quits in 1998. The ladies recently decided it was time to wake people up and save the music with their unique form of rock. Come Up for a Closer Look is their “Greatest Hits” compilation, a gatefold-sleeve double-album complete with killer art and photos, plus liner notes by Red Aunts fan Sasha Frere-Jones.  “The Red Aunts are nothing to mess with ... wonderfully reckless rock.” —L.A. Times

LP REIGNING SOUND Live At Goner Records    Awesome live performance recorded at goner Records.

LP REIGNING SOUND Love And Curses     Reigning Sound rulez.

LP REIGNING SOUND Time Bomb High School     One of their best albums!

LP REIGNING SOUND Too Much Guitar     One of their best too. Bit more in the red guitar wise,

2XLP REP, MIKE AND THE QUOTAS Stupor Hiatus     Stupor Hiatus culls the complete recorded works of the original Mike Rep and the Quotas, dating back to 1974 and moving forward into the early 1990s.

BK RETTMAN, TONY Nyhc - New York Hardcore    Based on original interviews with over 100 key historical figures, the dense 384-page volume features hundreds of images and over fifty chapters covering the bands, venues, labels, hangouts, and larger-than-life characters that built hardcore punk rock in New York City.

LP REV, MARTIN S/t    Highly underrated solo LP from Suicide synth man.

2XLP RUSSELL, ARTHUR Calling Out Of Context    REISSUED ON VINYL!!! The compilations that started the renaissance. In 2002, Audika Records entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with the estate of ARTHUR RUSSELL to compile and issue previously unreleased and out of print material from Arthur’s vast archive. This first album Calling Out Of Context, features 12 previously unreleased tracks of Buddhist Bubblegum Alt Disco Pop recorded during Arthur’s prime years 1985-90

2XLP SEGALL, TY Singles 2007-2010     Re-stocked double lp singles comp.

LP SEGALL, TY Sleeper     His more acoustic / psych effort from last year.

LP SEGALL, TY BAND Live In San Francisco     Live show from last year on vinyl.

LP SEVERED HEADS City Slab Horror     Re-stocked Oz industrial / electronic classics on coloured vinyl.

LP SEVERED HEADS Since The Accident

LP SHIVVERS S/t     Excellent poer pop from late 70's Milwaukee.

LP SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE Hexadic     SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE’s BEN CHASNEY has a restless intellect, which has regularly guided the progress of his creation. A lyrical mastery of acoustic finger-picking would be enough to build a body of work for most musicians; this is just the stepping-off point for Ben

2XLP SONIC YOUTH A Thousand Leaves    Re-stocked two LP.

LP SONIC YOUTH Anagrama   Sonic Youth's 1997 non-Geffen releases, Part I: four new songs

LP SONNY & THE SUNSETS Talent Night At The Ashram     Initially envisioned as a film project, each song on Talent Night at the Ashram was originally a short film that, when strung together, formed a feature-length movie. Equal parts Fellini and Os Mutantes, Talent Night at the Ashram is cinematic in its storytelling and kaleidoscopic in its mixing and merging of musical genres. ‘60s folk, electric sitars, flutes, and myriad other sounds help accentuate tales of professional bowlers in desperate need of a strike (“Icelene’s Loss”), a mansion that houses every woman Smith has ever known (“The Secluded Estate”), and Occupy meetings ending in bad love (“Secret Plot to Destroy the Underground”).

LP SUISHOU NO FUNE Prayer For Chibi    Lovely album from Japanese band. Shoegaze psych that gets even more dreamy when you think it's not possible too.

LP T REX Slider     My favourite album of theirs. Slinky glam rock

LP TERMINALS Singles & Sundries   The Terminals are smack in the center of all that is great about New Zealand music. Members of the group have connections to The Renderers, Scorched Earth Policy, The Axemen, The Pin Group and Dadamah, and the list goes on from there. They bridge the gap between the free-form sprawl of their improvising peers and the melodic beauty of Flying Nun’s poppiest groups.

LP THIN LIZZY Vagabonds Of The  Vagabonds presented a swaggering confidence, a band buoyed by the success of semi-accidental smash hit "Whisky In The Jar," and carved out a moody, dark sound by borrowing bits from the blues, folk, psych, and Celtic music

LP TOUGHSKINS Rumble Stilts Skin    Finally! A full-length assault from these long-reigning Ohio boot brutes! These hard ass bards march directly over your useless face like a ruthless display of Cold War era Soviet military combined with the grace of Liberace's Chauffeur

LP TROPA MACACA Sensacao Do Princi    Sensacao Do Principio is the third release proper from Tropa Macaca and their first with an American label. Their previous efforts on Ruby Red and Qbico were magnificent (though hard to find) efforts of blotted, aural sci-fi codifications somewhere between Anar Band and Blues Control.

LP UNSANE Wreck    Unsane celebrates its 20th anniversary by delivering the darkest and most personal record of their celebrated career; Wreck is the band’s defining moment.

2XLP URINALS Negative Capability     Want to hear America’s Wire, only twice as primitive (if that’s possible), with one quarter the sound quality? Even when they are covering the Soft Machine’s “Why Are We Sleeping?” they sound like a three-step primer on minimalism, in scratchy, fast, burping, nutso punk with clipped vocals. You can see why the Minutemen covered “Ack Ack Ack Ack,”

2XLP V/A Not So Quiet On The Western Front   1982’s Not So Quiet on the Western Front compilation was the first to document the exploding Northern California hardcore punk scene of the early ’80s. With 47 tracks clocking in at 74 minutes, it’s a massive and diverse set of material where internationally known bands like Dead Kennedys, MDC and Flipper rub elbows with cult favorites such as Church Police, Maniax and Scapegoats.

2XLP VAN ZANDT, TOWNES Live At The Old Quarter     Classic country / folk album. A must own!

7" VATICAN DAGGER Not To Be   New Orleans’ VATICAN DAGGER are made up of ex-NECOR HIPPIES, GARY WRONG ad ROMAN GABRIEL TODD. These three distinct forces combine to make some killer downer punk that is covered in noise, soaked in slime, and here to bum you out.

LP VICTOR DIMISICH BAND S/t   Originally released in 1983 on Flying Nun in a minuscule edition, the band’s lone self-titled 12-inch has become a cult classic more sought-after than owned. Through the intervening years, both the Xpressway and Medication labels issued cassette and CD compilations of the band’s material. With a unique sound that fused an almost gothic styling with warbly desert psych à la 13th Floor Elevators, The Victor Dimisich Band created its own genre, one that still has not been been aptly codified to date. Membership included Peter Stapleton (Vacuum, Pin Group, Scorched Earth Policy), Stephen Cogle (Vacuum, Terminals), Alan Meek (Vacuum, Bilders), Tony O’Grady and Mary Heney (25 Cents, Scorched Earth Policy). Historians and enthusiasts know that Heney replaced O’Grady just prior to the recording of the 12-inch, as the former had become a born-again Christian and sold his equipment.

2XLP VOIVOD To The Death 84   Recorded live in the band’s jam space in January 1984 with an old tape recorder and a couple of microphones, it nonetheless sounds great and hits as hard today as it did back then. This demo tape was sent to all the fanzines the band knew of at the time, and has circulated among collectors for years. The lineup for these recordings was Snake (Denis Bélanger) on lead vocals, Piggy (Denis D’Amour) on guitar, Blacky (Jean-Yves Thériault) on bass and Away (Michel Langevin) on drums. The track listing includes songs from War and Pain, their debut album, and six others, including a Mercyful Fate cover and two Venom covers

LP WAND Golem     Following up their debut full-length on Ty Segall’s God? label, Wand presents their second album, Golem, on In The Red. Recording with Chris Woodhouse at his Hanger studio in Sacramento, Wand summons the dark and heavy power of the riff.

LP WATERY LOVE Decorative Feeding    One of the best albums of last year. Stooges riffs and drunken rants about shitty adult dinner parties

LP WOODEN SHJIPS Dos     Re-stocked modern day kraut-rock gem!

LP WOODEN SHJIPS Vol. 1

X (AUSTRALIA) X - Aspirations    Best Australian album EVER!!

LP X (AUSTRALIA) X - Spurts     The demos they did as a four piece! Awesome.
