Hello and welcome to our first non-retrospective newsletter of 2019. It’s long overdue as things frankly have been pretty psycho in-store! Generally January and February are a time where we get a nice influx of 2ndhand stock but pair that with the sensation that is Marie Kondo and her tidying adventures, we’ve got a great inventory of secondhand vinyl, books, CDs and DVDs that will hopefully make you “sparkle with joy”. Keep reading for our Jan/Feb local round-up, independent import new releases and a boat load of record that’re either on-route (including two big boxes from La Vida Es Un Mus and Alter records) are just around the corner….
January is traditionally a pretty slow time for new records but we found ourselves reaching into the Australian section for new release listening a lot! J. McFarlane's Reality Guest ?– TA DA LP (Hobbies Galore) is a remarkable and unique art-pop record in the spirit of Young Marble Giants, the “new music” experiments in pop you would’ve heard around Arthur Russell’s time curating NYC’s The Kitchen or more recently The Native Cats. Sydney’s Negative Gears – Self Titled 12” (Disinfect) nails the difficult to execute thuggish but moody post-punk sound that sits somewhere near Diat, Total Control, Clockcleaner, Echo & The Bunnymen’s early BBC sessions, The Sound etc.… thankfully there’s more FORCE than mope on this one!
Speaking of mope, Sydney’s Mope City return with their News From Home LP (Tenth Court). In a current DIY climate dominated by Devo-tees, Dark Wavers and people mining the more obscure (and therefore hip) corners of punk history hearing a band meddle with unashamedly slo-core sounds feels brave and refreshing. Don’t want to paint this group as flannel fuzz lords, there’s certainly strands of the New Zealand undergrounds sadder-sacks (Peter Jefferies, The Pin Group) meets the more sonic/dynamic sound of Slint, Drive Like Jehu and Gaunt. All the Weathers - For the Worms LP (Rough Skies) is a charming record that kind of bi-passes being cornered into any sub-section of independent-rock that could fit into the early 80s Rough Trade or Kill Rock Stars catalogue. Hävittäjät’s self titled LP (Hardcore Victim) is the Southern Hemisphere’s top take on furious Euro-Hardcore (talkin Hardcore Punk here).
Alright onto February with Sleeper & Snake - Junction and High LP (Aarght Records). Repressed customers would almost definitely be familiar with the work of Sleeper (aka Amy Hill of Constant Mongrel, Terry, Primo etc) and Snake (aka Al Montfort of Total Control, Uv Race, Terry, Lower Plenty etc), two of the most prolific and CHERISHED darlings of Australian independent music! I guess this group is their country duo? There’s acoustic strummin’ and protest song singing, but where a Townes record would be embellished with strings ‘n such we’ve got a D-I-Y post-punk pallet of rhythm boxes, echo’d horns, hypnotic bass lines and consumer grade keyboards. Touches the friendly side of the avant-garde like the Snake & Friends LP from last year but don’t worry though there’s tunes a-plenty. Another hit for Al, Amy and Aarght Records.
Martin Frawley from The Twerps has a solo lp called “Undone At 31” on long running US independent rock staple, Merge Records. We had Julia Jacklin’s Crushing on Green Vinyl, it’s gone now, but will be back on black.
Traffik Island’s Nature Strip LP (Flightless) sees the solo project of Zak from Orb, Frowning Clouds and Hierophants transform into pastoral psych-pop.
Two new products in from SOOT, their debut album 'Pockmarked With... Soot!' Cassette (with mini zine insert) and Soot Zine Volume 3 (with Brisbane mixtape). Yep, two bundles of photocopied paper, magnetic tape, plastic and a sprinkle of glitter that contains both the spirit of amateur weirdo creativity and Soot's home city of Brisbane. A city that's musical output should be celebrated, and I'm not talking about the chart toppers from Vulture Street! Soot are Riley, Tia and James (James wasn't here for the photoshoot), playing bass, drums, glockenspiel and trumpet. They make a youthful agitated shronk that's kinda Beefheart-ish or Blurt-y (look up 'Fish Needs A Bike'), that fills the void Brisbane's Bent left. Most importantly it reminds me of the musical spirit I would've encountered at a Summer Winds festival or Chooch-A-Bahn show around 12 years ago. While I'm getting sentimental about pivotal parts of 21st century Australian D-I-Y, the Soot Zine continues the approach of Negative Guest List Zine and the accompanying cassette chronicles underground Brisbane in a way that puts equal weight on highly collectable 80s 7"s as it does some band that played a couple of house shows. One more selling point: Soot features members of the also excellent Goon Sax and Sorry Golden State.
And another two cassettes that’re near and dear to Repressed Records...
The Baby - First Steps Cassette (Meatspin). The Baby are an all-star band featuring members of BB & the Blips, Bed Wettin' Bad Boys, V.I.P.P. and Photogenic with longtime Repressed Records associate Ravi on the microphone. Familiar faces in the happening local music scene generally grappling with an instrument they're new at. The results are punk-adjacent, but not bound by execution-ism or orthodoxy. Like The Fall, Urinals, The Ulsers (Adelaide) and Hygiene (UK) before them they're a frugal, after work hours art-rock band. They could've formed a mixed-indoor cricket team or teamed up for pub trivia but thankfully they decided to start a band. The stuff that D-I-Y dreams are made of.
Steam Vent - Take It Easy Cassette (Chemical Imbalance). Steam Vent is a solo moniker of Del Lumanta, who you may know from various excellent electronic projects, drumming in Basic Human or generally as a voice for the good things in Sydney arts/music. This time Del is in slow-mo, bedroom guitar mode, which in this case that doesn't mean singer-songwriter (although I'd like to hear that tape). Two side long guitar meditations that are both fragile sounding but create a big, lush atmosphere. It's a similar lucid dream state achieved by Loren Conors and Love Chants with the rock-axe but with a Basinski like approach to slowly shifting repetitive phrases. Del, you've done it again!

ZOUNDS - Can't Cheat Karma LP
“The second release on Sealed Records is a 14 Track round up of the five singles by Zounds. The debut single from 1980 Can’t Cheat Karma was released on Crass Records and 39 Years later still stands as one of the finest singles both politically and musically. For the next three singles Zounds released them on Rough Trade Records, along with their debut album The Curse of Zounds. 1981’s Demystification was a tense and stark masterpiece. It was followed by the haunting Mikey Dread-produced Dancing and then the more straight up pop of More Trouble Coming Everyday. The final single of Zounds was La Vacht Qui Rit released on Belgium label Not So Brave in 1983 and was originally supposed to be a split single with The Mob but ended up with two scratchy studio tracks and two rough and raw live tracks recorded in Holland in 1982. Every home should have these essential Zounds recordings.”
