Weekly Update: Nasho, Primo, Big Supermarket, Permission, Welcome To the Centre Of The Universe

Posted by on

Interesting week here at Repressed Records, new-ish local bands making the jump from tape to LP, “side projects” become main events, dole-wave pioneers pivot to the motorik sound of the Durutti Column, Peace Punk, records with evil goats on the cover and more…

With little to no warning Nasho have hit us with their debut LP via No Patience Records! While it retains similar uncanny valley cover art to the cassette, these are new recordings that expand upon what they started on their 2017 demo. A cavernous blur of noise-y hardcore punk with enough of an underlying groove to keep things catchy in the chaos. Doesn’t really sound like anyone else but at points I’m reminded of Omegas, Bad Brains, Flux Of Pink Indians, Cro-mags… you know the good stuff! Features ex or current members of Dispossessed, BB & The Blips, Royal Headache and Good Throb.

Another parting gift from our beloved staff member/Nasho guitarist/all round legend Bryony is Modern Hate Zine #6 zine. The Australia Does Not Exist issue features conversations with Lena Molnar, Harry Bonifacio Baughan, Zephyr Pavey, Max Easton and Dan Stewart.

Volume 3 of Anti Fade Records New Centre of the Universe’ compilation is here, and this time on LP.  Features 17 bands from Victoria including Terry, Exek, School Damage, Vintage Crop, Alex MacFarlane, The Shifters, The Stroppies, Parsnip and many more - well worth the price of entry!

Never heard of Big Supermarket prior to this LP titled 1800, but it’s from a label that’s fast becoming an in-store favourite, Hobbies Galore. HG is run by Alex McFarlane, one of the guitarists/vocalists from The Stevens, and Big Supermarket features the other Stevens guitarists/vocalists Travis MacDonald. Obviously this is going to appeal to fans of the aforementioned The Stevens (who rule, duh), but BS draws from the scrappier side of things, almost like Brix era The Fall in parts or underrated Sydney band The Moles. While Alex McFarlane’s solo 7” was toying with aspects of Prog, this is definitely more Troggs. Good!

A shipment from UK label Upset The Rhythm is always a treat, nice records at a nice price! This box is exceptionally sweet as it includes the debut LP from PRIMO titled Amci. They’re a Melbourne trio (now quartet) whose debut tape on Hidiotic really caught our ear. A band that deals in pop hooks, inventive layered vocals and an upbeat energy that shifts back and forward between nervous and feel-good. Member of Terry, The Shifters and (as of recently) Constant Mongrel. Also in from UTR fellow Australians School Damage - Sings Four Songs About One Cat 7”, Vital Idles - Left hand LP, Apostille - Choose Life LP and a re-stock of all things Terry in anticipation of their 3rd LP.

On the Punk side of things we’ve got 12” of crazed hardcore from Berlin/Barcelona via Life Fucker, a reissue of No Trend’s horrific debut album Too Many Humans and  the second 7” EP from Alien Nosejob (aka Jake from Ausmuteants) titled Death Of The Vinyl Boom. The latest La Vida Es Un Mus shipment has given us Permission – Drawing Breath Through A Hole In The Ground 12”, UK Hardcore of the discordant variety, and a nice re-issue of the Peace Punk classic Omega Tribe – No Love Lost LP. Plus we’ve re-stocked the following choice titles….

TAPES, TAPES, TAPES…
Two great releases in from the most psychedelic partners in Australia, Matthew Earle and Nicola Morton. From Matthew we’ve got 'Bolwarra Tapes I' (Chemical Imbalance), featuring “Two long hypnotic trance-like ambient drone pieces w/ the sounds of his bushland surroundings also captured on tape, with both intense and subtle waves of insect noise as well as birds twerping, humming, gushes of wind blowing through trees/leaves, etc. across these recordings. no overdubs or editing.. recorded in real time, direct to tape!”. And from Nicola we have an archival collection from Vacant Valley under her Equalizer 24K moniker, “This LOST AND FOUND compilation tape documents a selected range of recordings made from 2001 til 2017. Some previously unreleased. Hectic lo-fi beats, oddly energising, manic electronic sounds.”

The mysterious Portable Dogs cassette was delivered to us in a microphone box, with this note... “Duo from Sweden featuring Rupert from the “dole wave pioneers” Dick Diver. Portable Dogs deliver instrumentals of dreamy pop soundscapes that disintegrate adeptly into one another and would definitely appeal to fans of Durutti Column, Eno’s another green world, any of the post wire weirdo projects.” A 5 track demo tape from guitar/synth/drum machine duo Dual Citizen says goth and cold wave in their bandcamp tags but has more of a messthetics-y D-I-Y charm than brooding coldness, worth a $5-er for sure! Been pumping the Blue Suede Platforms - Collection Cassette (Alberts Basement) a bit to the bemusement of many customers. Do you like both T-Rex and Mad Nanna? The rockabilly Alan Vega record and Half Japanese? Fonzie and Andy Kaufman? Yes, then check it out.

And lastly, you may have noticed we’ve been re-jigging the shops layout the last few months and have made more room for LPs. Slowly but surely we’ve been biggin’ up our inventory, here’s a list of classic reissues (well mostly, there’s a few new release) we’ve added to our catalogue.
