Back into our weekly updates, all refreshed and primed for a new year!
But First, What Have we Been Listening To?
Bill Converse’s records on Dark Entries really helped us through the end of the silly season. This Texan mixes pre-”club” electronic music (Kraftwerk and companies motorik rhythms, 70s synth arpeggios) with the beginnings of Motor City Techno. Kind of meditative but also driving, excellent “getting shit done in the shop” music. Unseen Worlds is a record label specialising in “unheralded and revolutionary, yet accessible, avant garde music”. Initially we were drawn to their catalogue by their Carl Stone and Laurie Spiegel but this week have been playing Elodie Lauten’s The Death of Don Juan on repeat. Lauten was a part of the NYC downtown scene that fit somewhere between punk and classical, this album featuring performances by Arthur Russell and Peter Zummo, Alan Licht put it in his Minimal Top Ten. If any of that means anything to ya check it out! It’s a treat to hear Sewercide - Immortalized In Suffering 12” again, an crude record reminiscent of that period where Thrash was mutating into Death Metal.
Exek - Ahead Of Two Thoughts LP The new album from Melbourne’s Exek has been release on Superior Viaduct imprint W25th. Excellent post-punk for fans of P.I.L (good era), This Heat, and Swell Maps.
Dave Thomas And The Holy Soul 7”(Damn You Ra) Dave Thomas from Pere Ubu played some shows with Sydney’s own Holy Soul as his backing band a few years back. Side A is a crazy studio cover of Hawkwind’s Master Of the Universe with a 2010 live recording on the b-side called Man In The Dark.
Ty Segall - Freedoms Goblin LP Yep he’s back. Double LP, 19 tracks and all. Features the hit single “Every 1’s A Winner”*, well it was a hit for Hot Chocolate in 1978.
Matthew Hopkins - G.R/S.S (Aussen Raum) The unstoppable Matthew Hopkins (formerly of Vincent Over The Sink, Half High and Naked On The Vague) returns with a new solo LP. On side one, field recordings made at various art galleries, museums and other institutional buildings. On side two, recordings made at Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) over several sessions throughout 2016. Of course through Matthew’s uniquely skewed perspective and editing/arranging process neither sound as expected!
Solid Space - Space Museum LP First ever official vinyl reissue of this album released in the U.K, 1982 by Dark Entries. Strange, minimal D.I.Y post-punk strongly influenced by the science fiction of the time.
BB And The Blips Tape Ripper debut tape from Sydney band featuring members of Housewives, Tim and The Boys, Good Throb, Nasho.
From Perth based Punk/Metal label Televised Suicide we have:
Bikini Cops 7" Third release from Bikini Cops, 6 new tracks of 70's surf and KBD punk and the new demo tape from punks No Future
The Rebel Cassette (Hidiotic) Solo project of Ben Waller from Country Teasers. Dry as sand, minimal post-punk.
X-Pop - Alphabet Cerel Cassette (Chemical Imbalance) ethereal rhythmic chimes, drones, and soundwaves intertwined with lovely, distant vocals.
Raven "The Night Is Dark" CD (Art as Catharsis) Raven is the solo project of Peter from Tangents. It’s a lovely mix of sweeping Dirty Three parts,The Necks with stabs of random noise bursts. Nice stuff.

SAHEL SOUND is a label specialising in music from West Africa, particularly in the sahel region of Mauritania, Mali, and Niger. We’ve found some great stuff on this label, and there’s a nice mix of traditional sounds with contemporary twists. These releases feels a lot more fun and less exploitative than the flood of 70s African Rock reissues that were coming out in the dozens 7-10 years ago! Mdou Moctar has become a real favourite, but it’s definitely worth checking out their whole catalogue. We have these releases in now:
