Weekly Update: Kye Records, Snake And Friends, Native Cats, Power, Recital, This Kind Of Punishment

Welcome to our fortnightly weekly update!

What have we listening to this week?

The Green Child LP featuring Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current) and Raven Mahon from Grass Widow is lovely, moody synth pop. If you like Stereolab, St Etienne, get on it. Bi-Hour are a  duo  from Tasmania. Very acerbic lyrics, songs are a mix of the Devo Corporate Anthem and darker, drawn out synth soundscapes. Good stuff! The new Portal LP Ion is a journey into the darkest reaches of psychedelic black metal. Technical but still crazy. The debut LP from Brisbane’s Bent has crept back into heavy rotation. It’s bent both by name and nature, think Kleenex/Liliput, The Slits or Au Pairs taking on Beefheart’s Magic Band.

Feature Items:

Snake & Friends - Self Titled Lp (RIP Society) Snake is Al Montfort who is in TotalControl, DickDiver, StraightJacketNation and a lot, lot more. Snake And Friends (mysterious!) has a lovely, late night DIY feel. Touches Krautrock, free jazz, folk and post-punk.

Native Cats - John Sharp Toro LP (RIP Society) Tassie's finest Native Cats I'd previously referred to as a more organic Suicide. This album rocks harder, more like prime The Fall, but still as hypnotic, strange and outsider as ever. The album is called John Sharp Toro, and I'm not sure who that is, but it's a cool name!

Power -  Road Dog / Death Kid 7” Latest denim clad release on Shipping Steel Records.

This Kind Of Punishment - Self Titled and A Beard Of Bees LP's  In the fertile terrain of New Zealand’s 1980s post-punk scene, few figures loom as large as the Jefferies brothers. Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies—the primary forces behind This Kind Of Punishment—wrote some of the best music to come out on Flying Nun, Xpressway or elsewhere. A dizzying mix of pastoral ballads and DIY experimentation

Black Mecha - Counterforce 2LP Black Mecha (masterminded by Fortress Crookedjaw of Wold), provides raw beats and hooks, alongside reflexive black laser rays, accumulating in a sci-fi themed conceptual rhythm music for your mind / body.

Lena Platonos - Gallop  LP  This record was released in 1985 and paved the way for Greek electronica of the 1990’s. ‘Gallop’ was composed in the wake of a painful separation, and took several months to complete. Lena says, “It’s a study in the mythology of urban population of the contemporary metropolis and also a gaze into the future life of it.” .

Simply Saucer - Cyborgs Revisited LP Formed in Hamilton, Ontario, these sci-fried proto-punks created a sound fusing Hawkwind, The Kinks, Pink Fairies, Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, and the omnipresent Velvet Underground. Originally recorded from 1974-1975, the album became a critically revered classic when it was finally unearthed in 1989 by Mole Records

Also arrived this week:

Straight Arrows - Out And Down 7”    Brand new 7” from Sydney favourite garage rockers.

Breeders - All Nerve LP  Kelly and Kim Deal are back! Great to hear their voices again. TBH, I listen to their first two albums more than the Pixies.

Soccer Mommy - Clean  (Clear Vinyl)  New on Fat Possum Records, lo-fi indie folk from Nashville.

Anna Von Hausswolf - Dead Magic LP Really dark, ominous sounding music from Sweden. Somewhere between The Swans and Kate Bush.

KYE Records

All good things have to come to an end but still we were sad to hear that Graham Lambkin finishing his label, Kye Records. In our eyes one of the most important labels exploring the outer limits of music. Call it experimental, or avant-garde, or whatever.  Better late than never, we’ve got their final two releases: Gabi Losoncy - HH LP and Maths Balance Volumes - Absence LP. Sample some of the goods here

New arrivals from avant-garde imprint Recital Program. Descriptions courtesy of the label…

Roger Eno – This Floating World – LP with CD
You might know him from his contributions to his brother Brian’s Ambient Series, this is The first solo work by Roger Eno in nearly a decade. This Floating World holds rustic and melancholic piano works, as grey and mossy as a country cottage.

Dick Higgins – “Poems & Metapoems” LP
Many know Dick Higgins as the father of Intermedia, a key player in the birth of Fluxus, and the owner/operator of the fabulous Something Else Press.  His own poetry is what stirred me. Namely, his book FOEW&OMBWHNW, which contains one of my favorite of his works, “Moments in the Lives of Great Women,” along with other lovely poems (some included on this LP). This LP holds fourteen voice-based tape works made from the years 1968 to 2000.  While there is some use of cut-up tape manipulation, the artistry truly lies in his performance of the sound plays.  Multi-tracking is utilized and Arrigo’s nebulous voice paintings splat and click and glide. His bold expression is inspiring to me: it leads by example in encouraging the pulling of oneself further into their art.

Arrigo Lora-Totino – “Out of Page” LP
Collection of recordings by the Italian sound and concrete poet Arrigo Lora-Totino (1928-2016). His place in the history and development of poetical intermedia is undisputed.

Gabi Losoncy – “Security Besides Love” LP
Security Besides Love is the first vinyl album from Philadelphian artist Gabi Losoncy.  This album is an account of the artist’s life. The first side voyeuristically and objectively documents Gabi’s external experiences and habitats; in this instance, a conversation heard while riding public transportation. The second side of this record turns back in on the artist herself with an associative monologue, in which an understanding of her own artwork is examined.  It is fair and honest and walks through the whole house leaving windows open. There is a small piece of film which separates, seemingly, Gabi’s daily life and her artwork.  It is quite inspiring. Understanding this can instill the same mysterious allure into your own trials and leisures. Limited Edition of 300. Comes with artist’s bumper sticker
