This non-self seriousness is at the center of the profound result. I don’t have a name for it but this comedic sensibility can be found in fellow West Coast institution Mulch Magazine, the science fiction writings of Max Lavergne and the television program ‘Joe Pera Talks with You’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe beats are minimal and gritty without pandering to the dusty “keep it real” flat cap wearing boom bappers. In fact they’re maybe a bit accidentally on-trend, I could imagine Mike or Earl Sweatshirt or Pink Siifu rapping on them. I don’t know how to analyse the lyrical skills of C.R.A.I.G., but he says a lot and every play I’m still hearing new things.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA surface comparison would be fellow, semi-narrative based Hip Hop concept albums like Dr Octagon or A Prince Among Thieves, but really the 3D chess going on here is closer to Kool Keith’s Matthew. It’s got the funniest and most purposeful spoken interludes in a concept album since The Shadow Ring’s ‘Lighthouse’ and captures the sometimes insightful, sometimes insane multitudes that exist in Non Phixon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHonestly this record is the type of weidr-arse, didn’t-know-I-needed-this-in-my-life discovery that I live for! CCT are embracing the freedom in songwriting but the survival mode muscle memory kicks in and they can’t help lurch forward with a crazed look in their eye. Ibiza heaves in and out like a panicked chest in a semi-aware tumult of the watery subconscious. The painful, ecstatic rush of vulnerability in the face of fear. Fiery opposition to anything that threatens their liberty. It’s no wonder that the ranting, crooning vocals recall the lunacy of Roky Erickson, there’s something coming out that couldn’t be kept in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJoy Division was a catchy band with ‘nice’ songs. But we know that’s not the whole truth, especially if you’ve heard the live recordings that bare a menacing swagger and remind you that they were a fucking PUNK band. There’s a constant push and pull. Ibiza shares that DNA albeit with an added dose of The Cure’s intoxicating chorus-soaked leads that swirl through the aching, hidden parts of your nervous system. Among this relative minimalism is also a certain lyricism, one that still pushes a melody through the haze of overtones, in a manner that nods to both his avant and rockin’ forebears stick around for Side 4’s killer acknowledgement of The Stooges’ minimalism with a cover of 1970).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAfter only a few listens I feel like I’m only scratching the surface. In what could be seen as a cop-out move, I can’t recommend reading Edward from Nature Strip’s astute and enjoyable press release for the LP below, partially because I can’t say it better myself and partially because he’s one of the finest music writers going at the moment!\u003cbr\u003e–Mitch\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"tralbumData tralbum-about\"\u003e------------\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"tralbumData tralbum-about\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"tralbumData tralbum-about\"\u003eAlan Licht returns to VDSQ with Havens, a sprawling double-disc set of exploratory guitar-based compositions forged from the myriad possibilities arising when strings collide with electricity \u0026amp; space. Licht is masterful and relentless in his negotiation of the often-unknowable intersections that exist between juxtaposing strands of sound. His work is marked by contrast \u0026amp; contradiction: maximalism versus minimalism; rockist inclinations versus avant, expanded-field expression; loose improvisation versus considered performance. What these dichotomies shouldn’t obscure, however, is the simple pleasure that transpires in his refracting of idiom, conjuring expansive pieces that collapse, stratify \u0026amp; convolve competing schools of music to wholly singular ends.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHavens documents a new sound for Licht, building on a previous VDSQ release \"Currents,\" his last major solo outing from 2015. Playing those solo acoustic tracks live on tour, their lyricism translated through the power of a PA, Licht was taken by the overtones surging atop those song-like pieces, transforming them into something new. The compositions here, particularly the mesmeric title track, luxuriate in that newfound sense of possibility, infused with a rock-born urgency by way of lightning-fast, urgent strumming gradually\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eunfurling layers of phantom harmonics. Celestial punk, if you will; guitar soli of such ever-surging vitality as to blur \u0026amp; distend dense chord shapes to phantasmagoric effect. The record is rich with considered, contained explosivity, firmly minimalist in its patient pace \u0026amp; ear for hallucination but expressed in defiantly, deliciously rock terms, each piece its own lyrical hybrid built of scant elements unfurled with painterly grace. This is firmly a \"guitar\" record, despite what your ears might tell you; barring a short mellotron intervention, Havens is almost unbelievably wrought from guitar alone, ably deployed straight or perverted into abstracted spectres \u0026amp; illusions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe central pairing of sidelong epics, \"Nonchalant\" \u0026amp; \"Frank Sinatra Drive\", feel as succinct an encapsulation as any as to the magic of this new approach. On the former, a focal acoustic figure is put through the most beautiful of wringers over its peripatetic duration, Licht moving up the fretboard with intuitive precision to properly excavate the possibilities of the melody as wraith tones take hold \u0026amp; thrust it all upward. The latter, moving over to electric and adding a brief, enigmatic vocal, is a full-throttle beauty, a multi-movement set of variations on a single chord progression realized through a cascade of resplendent guitar that feels like infinite rapture, accelerating towards the ether before plateauing in splendid drone. The shape of the guitar is the context for the sounds it makes; your touch activates this machine, alters, creates and transforms its possibilities. The shape is created and outlined by the touch, but it contains absence, undefined space.
